Deglove of tail

Accidents happen and a rats' tail can either be partly injured or totally degloved.

To prevent this, don't use inadequate wire wheels, check cage for any area where the tail might get caught and don't handle your rat by picking it up by the tail.

In the case of an injury, assess the situation. It it is merely the tip of the tail, it will become dry and fall off. Keep the wound clean and seek immediate medical care if you suspect your rat to be in pain or the tail inflamed.  When in doubt, rather seek medical attention.

If extensive you will need veterinary care asap. Stop possible bleeding by wrapping the tail in a clean cloth and take the rat to the vet as soon as possible.

The vet will make a call on either amputating the tail or letting nature run its course. The vet will also supply antibiotics like baytril and a pain medication and anti inflammatory like metacam or ibuprofen to reduce the risk of inflammation.

Rats will cope without a tail or a partial amputation, but take into account that they need their tails for both balance when climbing and regulating of body temperature.

Supply your rat with a splash pool, frozen veggies / water bottle or cold tile in summer to help them cool down.
