I was introduced to the idea of nebulizing rats about 4 years ago by Caryn Ferriere, a moderator on the Ratanooga Forum. Please note that if your rat is suffering from a respiratory infection, nebulizing does not replace a visit to the vet but it does aid to open airways and relieve symptoms. It will also help rats suffering from allergies. I bought my nebulizer at dischem and medicines at my local pharmacy.
Nebulizing mix: 5 ml nebulizing saline from pharmacy @ R15-R20 a bag. Do not use saline for contact lenses or home made saline! 1 respule (2,5 ml) Duolin or a few drops of nebulising Bisolvon.
If your rat suffers from a heart condition, its best to use Duolin as Bisolvon increases their heart rate. I am using a see through plastic cage to nebulise so i can keep an eye on the rats. The bars at the top are covered with a towel. You can also use a small hamster cage covered with towel or plastic see through tub with hole cut into the side for the nozzle of the nebuliser to fit through. Nebulise for 10 minutes, 1-2 times a day. I prefer to put several rats into the cage as a single rat may stress. It is also a good idea to supply treats inside the cage.
The following is a link to the post on nebulizing written by Caryn, as well as a list of other medicines you may use:http://forums.ratanooga.co.za/index.php…

This is the cage i use for nebulizing. It is enclosed but i can still see and monitor the rats. Several rats may be nebulized at the same time. Offer them treats, add a friend and keep the noisy nebulizer as far away as possible to make it a more pleasant experience.

Optionally use a carry cage and cover it with a towel. (Close the front as soon as the rats are inside the cage) Always keep the reservoir of the nebulizer upright.
