I bought my first pet rat in 1998.  For the next 12 years, I was a pet owner keeping a mischief of about five girls, adding one or two new rats per year.

Back then it was sometimes difficult to find rats, but as reptiles and other exotic pets gained popularity in South Africa, rats were mass bred as feeders.  Due to poor breeding and husbandry, the rats obtained from pet stores now had to undergo long periods of trust training, often had respiratory infections or permanent lung scarring to some degree or had to be treated for parasites.  Young females were almost always pregnant when bought, even if only a few weeks old.

I then decided to rather breed my own healthy pets and Pretoria Rattery was officially opened in 2010.

Soon after, I discovered the Ratanooga rat community, a forum with a small but passionate group of pet owners.  They had their own breeders working with imported lines.  I applied to become a SARBU breeder and a year later I received my first pedigree rats.

Through the years I have bred almost every imported variety, but finally decided to scale down and focus on my personal favorite varieties, Essex, variegated and blazed.

I breed only a few litters a year and surplus pups are pet placed or send to other ethical ratteries.

I focus on breeding companion animals with good health, type and temperament.
